I’m originally from Germany, moved to Scotland 7 years ago and have loved it here since! In my spare time I do brazilian jiu jitsu and muay thai, martial arts have helped me focus on the rest of my commitments. I’m interested in microbiology and biology in general and have been studying it since my undergraduate at Edinburgh Napier University, before moving to the University of Strathclyde. I love cooking with and for my friends – they are the most important part of my life and I have met so many colleagues that have turned into good friends over the course of my PhD.

My PhD work looks at using genetic engineering to try and increase the production of an acid, clavulanic acid, from a bacteria called Streptomyces clavuligerus. This acid is used in combination with antibiotics such as penicillin and prevents resistance against these common antibiotics.

My Typical Day:
I wake up and go to the gym, then have breakfast at work around 9am. This is when I check my emails and make a to do list. I go into the lab and finish my day around 5pm.

I normally start in the lab around 9am, but my work schedule greatly depends on my experiments. On days when I need to stay later, I may start later too and this applies for finishing earlier. I like to break up my day doing lab work and also desk work – the variety of different tasks is refreshing and something I enjoy about doing a PhD.

What I'd do with the prize money:
I would spend my prize money to organise a networking events for students, so that career options are more accessible and students get a better idea of the options available to them in the future.
