The variety and the fact I get to help people! No day is ever the same and I don’t have to spend all my time sat at a desk looking at a screen. I get to go into the lab to do different experiments each day and I also get to work with a lot of lovely people who are really passionate about improving our understanding of cancer so we can help patients. But my favourite part is knowing that my work will help someone to get better cancer treatment in the future.

The best thing of being an academic teacher is the interaction with the students, especially those who are enthusiastic about learning. Explaining complex concepts can be tricky, but when I see eyes lighting up I know that the job is done! In terms of research, the best thing is that I can have my own ideas, write proposals and get funding to make them a reality. There are no limits in creativity, it’s just you and your brain working to find solutions to difficult problems!

The best thing about my job is that moment a student understands something they’ve been struggling with because I know how much it will mean to them

The best thing about my job is being able to think up an idea, experiment with it in the lab and possibly see it become a product in real life where it makes a real difference to our environment and our lives

The people I work with! They’re very kind, thoughtful, smart, and we’ve become great friends. A lab is like a second family, you spend a lot of time together and share a lot of fun (and sometimes difficult) experiences.

The feeling of fulfilment when something that you’ve been trying to figure out for ages finally clicks- best thing ever!

The best thing about my job, is the flexibility to design experiments and to try things that may or may not work. But the feeling that you get when an experiment has worked exactly as you predicted is great.

There are many great things about this job, but the best is…. this job makes me stay young forever….. or atleast young at heart. Don’t believe me? Then, try it out yourself and you will love it (in 15 years time?). Why do I feel that way? You get to meet similar great minds or even some superior ones, read every day to keep uptodate on the field and get to inspire and mentor (teach, guide and supervise) next geneartion of scientists. Most of these young minds do not take you for granted and lead to great brain stimulating and challenging (serious science) discussions. We also get to work with young school students like you. All of these keeps us young.

Knowing that I can help write some software which might help a patient get a diagnosis, so that they can get the best treatment for their condition. I am also really encouraged to always keep learning, so my brain is always switched on and it’s never boring!

I like how you get to answer questions no one knows the answer to by figuring it out yourself. Working out a problem that you’ve found hard is also really good – like a true science breakthrough!

I work with robots that help us analyse thousands of samples a day. Staying at the cutting-edge of science is the best part of this job.

      Hi,

My colleagues! I really enjoy meeting different people, from different countries, and different disciplines. My work is all about coming up with ideas and solving puzzles about how we can all eat healthier and in a more environmentally sustainable way. I learn something new from my colleagues everyday, they also make me laugh 🙂

Just knowing your helping in a big or small way to make the lives of people, or animals, better.

Every day is different from the other, and I interact with so many different people. The best part for me though is probably when I get to talk about my ideas and hypotheses with others (not always scientists!)
