I knew I wanted to be a scientist when I did my Y10 work experience (when I was 14, many years ago!). I worked in a pharmacy for 2 weeks, as I originally wanted to be a pharmacist. I learned that I didn;’t want to do this and found out my school science teacher, Mrs Owen, used to be a pharmacist. She told me to go and design medicines, rather than do pharmacy.
When I did my Master’s research project at University (between 2013 and 2014), I learned that I really wanted to be a researcher. Sometimes, you are the first person in the world to be trying the experiment you are performing. This can be exciting (and a bit daunting too)!
I think I first had a feeling I wanted to be a scientist when I was 14 and I learnt about cell biology. I knew for sure when I studied molecular biology at uni (I was 20).
I actually wanted to be an artist up until the year I had to choose my University course! I just chose maths and physics at A Level because I enjoyed it but intended to do a Fine Art degree (:
It wasn’t until I attended a summer school program in year 12 (17 years old) that I realised a Physics degree was possible for me!

I didn’t really know for sure until my first university open day- that’s where I learned about neuroscience and decided I wanted to make it my job!
