My favourite science experiment that I do at work is to use combinations of antibodies to label the surface of cells and isolate from that the very rare stem cells. I love putting these cells in culture and identifying the types of cells that they can produce. Sometimes it can be very surprising

My favourite is called western blot and it’s used to look at specific proteins from our cells. It makes pretty images and it can give so much information for our research!

      Factor assays,
involves the investigation of factor deficiency in a patient to find out which factors the are lacking. could be intrinsic or extrinsic depending on if it was prothrombin time (PT) or Activated partial thromboplastin time(APTT) that is prolonged and patient hasn’t got liver issues, DIC, on heparin/ DOACS.

Additional test such as thrombin time(TT) is done and if is normal. Mixing studies is carried out and if it corrects then the patient is factor deficient usually for the intrinsic pathway then factor assay will be done to find out which particular one it could be FVIII or IX deficiency etc.
This whole investigation is done if a patient is suspected of bleeding and unable to form a clot to help stop the bleed/if a patient bleeding is unexpected or can’t be explained then other complex investigations can be done such as inhibitors testing and factor VIII Elisa or even Bethesda assay for acquired haemophilia
