About 10 to 15 years. Yes is worth the effort.

This isn’t really my area, but after graduating from a medical degree (around 5 years) I think it takes around 6-8 years to get the experience to specialise and become a consultant. It’s probably worth it for the responsibility, independence and pay 🙂
