About Me:
I am a final year PhD student in brain imaging 🧠📷 at King’s College London. I live in London. My family stays in India. I enjoy playing racquet sports especially ping pong and badminton. I also like to cycle (when the weather is good!) 🌞.

I was born in India and went to school and university there. UK is the first country I went to outside of India, but now that I’m here, I have been totally bitten by the travel bug! My last trip was Naples and I loved the culture and the pizzas there 🍕. I also like hiking in the mountains, which is where I was during most of the COVID lockdown year.
You will often find me engaged in discussions about science, politics and everything in between with my friends. I’ve learnt that the key to enjoying science is to always be curious and to never stop asking questions!

My Work:
My research work involves finding the answer to the question “how can you use a medical machine called an MRI scanner to take high resolution images 📸 of the inside of the human body especially the human brain 🧠 “?

MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. It’s a special kind of medical machine that doctors use to take pictures of the inside of your body. It’s kind of like taking a picture of your insides with a camera, but instead of using light, we use magnets! 🧲
While you’re inside the machine, the magnets in the machine create a strong magnetic field around your body. My work is to understand how this magnetic field is applied and what changes I can do it to get a good – looking image. Ultimately, I want to learn how to make the MRI scanner show the tiniest of the tiny parts in the human brain so that any doctor looking at them can easily find out the health of a person for a successful diagnosis. 👩🔬

My Typical Day:
I wake up, shower and have my coffee ☕ (when I’m not running late!). I scroll through Twitter to read up on news which is often a mix of politics, events and science.
I cycle 🚴 to reach work around 9am. I start my work day by reading up journal papers relevant to my job. I work on my computer to do some programming for the MRI scanner. On some, not all, days, I go to the MRI scanner, to meet the person who has volunteered to be scanned. I scan them for an hour usually and save the data on my computer. I end my day with a workout session at the gym to reach home around 8pm.

In the MRI scanner, I’m often accompanied by the radiographer who is a healthcare professional whose job is also to understand how the scanner works and to ensure the safety of the volunteer being scanned. The volunteers can even choose to watch films or TV or netflix when they are inside the scanner so they don’t get bored! 📺

What I'd do with the prize money:
If I win the prize money, I will spend it in building a school workshop that will involve getting a DJ to mix the sounds that an MRI scanner makes and turn it into fun music tracks 🎶
