About Me:
I study a sneaky fungal pathogen of wheat – Fusarium graminearum and spend my days trying to find ways to prevent disease spread. In my free time I enjoy gaming, reading and rock climbing!

I am a PhD student at Rothamsted Research, where I study plant-pathogen interactions. I spend my workdays coding and processing large amounts of genetic data to identify key genes needed for infection. I did my undergraduate in the University of Edinburgh where I completed my Bsc in Biological Science (Plant Science).
I fell in love with studying biology and genetics when I was 16 and wanted to be a scientist ever since!

We make use of gene expression data to map the infection process of F. graminearum. We hope this will allow us to identify new targets for developing resistant crops.

My Typical Day:
I normally bike to work after a short workout and arrive there 9 am. I then plan out my day ahead, lately this has consisted of me writing code but some days are filled with practical work. I then leave at around 5 -6 pm.

I normally bike to work after a short workout and arrive there 9 am. I then plan out my day ahead, lately this has consisted of me writing code but some days are filled with practical work. This often includes infecting plants with mutant fungal strains to see if they affect the way disease spreads. I then leave at around 5 -6 pm and spend my evening either playing boardgames, climbing, manning the local student led bar or playing video games.

What I'd do with the prize money:
I would organise an engagement acitivty at Rothamsted Research, where myself and staff from different groups can demonstrate complex ideas on plant health as simple interactive installations and games.
