About Me:
I’m a Specialist Biomedical Scientist working in a busy hospital lab, I specialise in Haematology (study of blood🩸) and Blood Transfusion 🅰️➕. When I’m not in the lab, I can usually be found curled up on the sofa watching Netflix 📺 with a cup of tea ☕ and a slice of cake 🎂.

I test blood samples which come from patients in the hospitals. The results are sent to doctors who use them to diagnose patients or make sure treatments are working. We run all sorts of blood tests in the lab from liver screens and diabetes tests through to blood grouping and many. many others.
I also do blood grouping for patients and match patients with blood from suitable donors (for example, a patients with A Pos blood will need blood ideally from an A Pos donor). Then if these patients bleed during surgery/treatment, there is life-saving blood available for the patients to be transfused.

My Typical Day:
After waking up, I have a cup of tea to get my brain cells going then head to work. I put on my lab coat, gloves, and safety glasses then get started on my day which will involve testing lots of blood samples.
It gets pretty busy during the day because the hospital has so much going on including surgeries and a hectic Emergency Room – and everyone is waiting on the results I release before they can treat patients, so I have to work quickly and accurately to make sure patients are not left waiting around.

What I'd do with the prize money:
I would use the prize money on furthering public engagement with Biomedical Sciences and raising the profile of Biomedical Scientists, because a lot of people do not know that we exist!
Despite so many people using the vital services of laboratory staff, most people still don’t know what we do or who we are! I would use the prize money to fund displays and stalls where members of the public can engage with real Biomedical Scientists, learn more about the profession and what our role is in the patient journey, and have a go at some fun activities (like testing fake samples or learning to use a microscope) that will help them to fully understand what working in the lab is like!
